Operation Respond Emergency Information System (OREISTM) is a software program designed specifically to serve the emergency response community. The program features emergency hazardous materials information for first responders to freight train and motor carrier incidents, as well as detailed diagrammatic schematics for many passenger trains throughout North America.

OREISTM is a powerful response tool. It provides emergency workers with vital information about dangerous and often unstable substances, and the proper way to handle these substances. In an emergency situation, time is of the essence. Seconds can mean the difference between life and death. If used properly, OREISTM has the potential to reduce response time by providing quick and accurate information about the identification and handling of hazardous materials.

OREISTM contains direct links to carrier databases to identify hazardous materials contents and provide guidance in a real-time environment. The system currently contains links to every Class I railroad in the United States and several short line and regional railroads. OREIS includes the Brownsville and Rio Grande, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, Canadian National, CN/IC, CSX, Gateway Western, Kansas City Southern, Montana Rail Link, Norfolk Southern, Texas Mexican Railroad, Union Pacific, Utah Railway and Wisconsin Central as well as Yellow Freight trucking and W.W. Rowland intermodal transportation. In actual responses and several tests, OREIS has reduced response time by an average of seventeen minutes.

The diagrammatic schematics contained in OREISTM allow responders to immediately begin rescue operations by providing interior and exterior views of many passenger cars and locomotives throughout North America. OREISTM will also display seat configuration, emergency exit doors and windows, and the location of electric and fuel sources to save critical time in a rescue.

ORIESTM currently contains equipment schematics for Amtrak, Caltrain, GO Transit, Long Island Railroad, MARC, New Jersey Transit, VIA Rail Canada, Virginia Railway Express and Washington, DC's Metro (WMATA).

OREISTM also features a tank truck silhouette feature that allows responders to identify the likely hazmat contents of a tank truck based on its size and shape. Several chemical databases are also included in the system, like the AAR's Chemical List, for second-source and reference purposes.

The latest version of OREISTM contains many new features to compliment the already existing system. This includes the addition of several new carriers, including a hazmat connection for the Montana Rail Link and schematics for Washington, DC's Metro System. The Coast Guard's CHRIS Database was also added to the system.

The OREISTM package is available as a windows-based CD-ROM software application, complete with comprehensive training programs, reference materials, and ongoing technical support. The program requires only a personal computer and a modem.

OREISTM is also now available in Internet-enabled version that allows users to access OREISTM through their Web browser. The OREISTM Internet system is still under development and users will not be able to access the full range of OREISTM features over the Web for another few months.
