Public safety and security in the United States are the joint responsibility of the government and private sector. In the aftermath of September 11th, President Bush called on the private sector to assist the Federal Government in securing our nation. Many U.S. corporations took this responsibility seriously. The Emergency Services Information Network Corporation (ESINC) was formed in late 2001 to do just that; assist the public sector in matters of emergency response and preparedness. ESINC has teamed up with the Operation Respond Institute (ORI) to provide responders with useful tools and technology. ESINC, under a license agreement with ORI, has developed a network of connected emergency responders at www.esinc.info. Federal and local governments, transportation and chemical companies and other public and private entities can use this network to disseminate important emergency information, like notification and incident alerts, to targeted groups of emergency responders. Responders connected to the network can receive this information through a variety of means, including cell phone, email and fax. In a recent test of the network, a railroad sent an emergency phone number notification announcement to over 2,000 emergency responders in North America. Emergency responders can join the network by installing the OREISTM software, which is free-of-charge. ESINC offers many other useful features to responders, including the ability to communicate with responders throughout the network. This is especially useful for preplanning or preparedness.
